Rory McIlroy’s stunning victory at Wentworth last Sunday evening was long overdue. Over the last few months he had been showing glimpses of his unending talent and finally all clicked into gear at the European Tour’s flagship event.

It was one welcomed, no doubt, by the European Tour. Twelve months ago the very same event saw chief executive George O’Grady feature in the headlines alongside Sergio Garcia for all the wrong reasons, and you sensed that he was delighted and relieved to be able to crown McIlroy as champion on Sunday night.

Some might find irony in the flagship event being won by a player who, by his own admission - and on the evidence of all known form - prefers playing with the sun on his back on the richer, sexier PGA Tour. But Rory remains European and there was no lack of support for him on Sunday, from his peers to the massive crowds who again flocked to Surrey.

Such was the storyline that, for once, the European Tour somewhat overshadowed a notable event in America, as Adam Scott delivered the goods under the mantle of world number one.

Winning as he did at the end of his first week atop the world rankings was sensational, and the two birdies he produced to see off Jason Dufner better still.

At times I’ve wondered whether Scott, like Martin Kaymer before him, isn’t quite ready to sit on top of the pile. He’s put that concern to bed already.

The wider picture is that we’re now in sight of the US Open and, if Henrik Stenson were to win the Nordea Masters this week, we probably couldn’t be better set for Pinehurst.

Lowry continues great form On Monday, Shane Lowry built on the momentum established at Wentworth to top the leaderboard in US Open qualifying at Walton Heath, in the process booking a ticket to Pinehurst next month.

His confidence soaring after banking the biggest cheque of his career, €527,770, in second spot behind McIlroy at the BMW PGA Chmapionship, Lowry (27) left a 105-man field splashing in his wake as he completed the rain-doused 36-hole US Open International Qualifier in eight-under.

Joining him are Simon Griffiths, Niclas Fasth, Garth Mulroy, Chris Doak, Shiv Kapur, Max Kieffer, Brooks Koepka, Graeme Storm, Marcel Siem, Lucas Bjerregaard, Tom Lewis, Oliver Fisher and Andrea Pavan.
