They may not be just as demanding as what the players experienced at Pinehurst for the recent US Open, but as we get further into the summer, courses are drying out and greens are beginning to get firmer and faster.

Pitch shots which only a month or so ago would have stopped on landing are now bouncing and running out therefore adjustments need to be made in how these shots are played.

1. Take more loft Many club players often only use their sand wedge for bunkers and nothing else. Try experimenting with this club, or even a higher lofted club, from distances and for shots that you normally use your pitching wedge. The higher loft will increase the trajectory on the ball meaning that it won’t run as far on landing.

2. Clean your grooves Regardless of what club you are using the spin generated will be reduced if the grooves are clogged up with dirt. Keeping them clean will allow for the maximum spin to be imparted creating more control when the ball lands.

3. Play a softer ball Investing in a premier ball, which spins more and provides more feel, will make a huge difference to all areas of the short game during the summer months. Don’t be concerned about losing distance from the tee, as you will probably find they go as long if not longer than any hard ball.

4. Change your landing area This is especially true if coming out of any kind of rough or when downwind as it is inevitable that the ball will run out. In certain circumstances you may have to land the ball on fairway well short of the green in order to get it close.

If however the flag is close to the front of the green, which is guarded by hazards, accepting that you are unlikely to get it close, is also very important and will help reduce your scores by taking unnecessary risks.
