Captains Day With over 120 members and guests taking part in Kevin Slowey’s Captain’s Day on Saturday, the Captain was not going to make it easy to win the great prizes on offer. And so it was that players faced a severe test of their skills when playing to some of the most difficult pin positions they had seen since Captain’s Day 2007. With the course playing long and pins in unfamiliar positions, many a player left the course scratching their head wondering and if they had just played the Augusta National course.

On a day when birdies were few and far between, two men, Past Captain Brian Doran (14) and Chris Maguire Jnr (14) ended their rounds equal on a Net 66 with Brian taking first prize on countback.

Despite a double bogey on the first and 12th, Brian kept out of trouble and in the middle of the fairway most of the day and had a very steady round of 11 pars and five bogeys to lift first prize.

However, his round was not without its moments, with Brian uncharacteristically being in the very middle of trees on the left of the second.

However, with a marvellous rescue shot he escaped back onto the fairway without hitting a single tree and going on to par the hole.

Almost hole for hole with 10 pars, seven bogeys and one double bogey Chris Maguire gave Brian a run for his money to collect second prize. Paul Duffy (6) in third place with a Net 71, did not let the testing conditions affect his game and was the first to return a card with three birdies, along with eight pars and five bogeys.

The other prize-winners were: Gross prize - Nicky Wilson (4) - Gross 75 Front 9 - Ken Coulter (18) Net 34 Back 9 - David Truesdale (11) Net 31.5 Past Captains prize – Ronnie Little (15) Net 72 Junior Prize – Stephen Culbert (6) Net 71 Ladies Prize – Rita McKechnie (27) 43 pts Visitors Prize – Billy Reynolds 37 pts Nearest the Pin – Teddy Elliott Longest Drive – Matthew McBurnie E.G.G.S – Maurice Lawton 31 pts L.E.G.S. – Doreen Cathcart 21 pts Captain Kevin Slowey would like to thank his guests and visitors to his Captain’s Day for their very generous donations and gifts which raised £1200 towards the cost of a Heart Defibrillator for the Golf Club. In a round which included two birdies, nine pars (six consecutively) and six bogeys, Andrew finished the day with a Gross 77. In second place was Junior member Stephen Culbert (7) with a Net 66.
