Ever since Bernard Langer’s 13 stroke victory in last week British Open Seniors many of his fellow senior players have been pushing for the Germans inclusion on this year’s Ryder Cup Team at Gleneagles. Tom Watson, Colin Montgomery and Tony Jacklin have all called for Langer to be considered for Ryder Cup selection after his superb display.

If Langer is picked by European captain Paul McGinley for the match at Gleneagles in September he would become the oldest player in the history of the competition. American Ray Floyd was 51 when he competed in 1993.

The 56 year old German wasn’t afraid to voice his opinion when he claimed: “We’ve been talking about it for a number of years now because I’ve been playing some really good golf the last six or seven years. It’s up to the captain. I certainly feel my golf is worthy of playing in the Ryder Cup.” However good he is playing it is difficult to see Paul McGinley choosing Langer as one of his wild cards. Maybe if Langer had competed in more ranking events then a stronger case could be put forward. There is no doubt on his day he can beat any of the top players but maybe he needs to be still competing on either of the main tours to justify selection at this time.

Comments from many of those who will make up the Ryder Cup Team will need careful direction as Langer has been a stalwart of European Golf for many years. Recent Open Champion Rory McIlroy firmly laid out his thoughts on the matter: “I think the team dynamic is pretty good at the minute with the mix that we’ve got and to bring someone in that hasn’t spent much time around us mightn’t be the best.

“He’s not playing against the regular guys week in and week out but he’s playing great golf obviously and what he’s done this year, and Monty, who has won two senior majors in 2014 as well, has been fantastic. If they were to be involved as vice-captains or something then I’d be all for that, but I don’t think they should be on the team.” No doubt this story will gain momentum over the next few weeks but don’t be surprised if Paul McGinley ends such speculation in the immediate future.
