Why get custom fitted?

In many ways, golf club custom fitting is like buying a new pair of shoes. Would you ever consider buying an expensive pair without trying them on for size first?

Perhaps it is now time to start applying similar logic to golf clubs.

“You could go out and spend hundreds of pounds on the latest driver on the market, but if the club is not set up to suit your swing characteristics, you could very well hit it worse than your previous driver that was custom fit,” claims Liam McCool Club Professional at Enniskillen Golf Club.

The key to the process is the launch monitor, where the numbers do not lie.

The flight of the golf ball tells you everything, a lesson McCool learnt from the great John Jacobs at Malone some 20 years ago.

Even back then Jacobs was way ahead of all other swing tutors, the combination of the ball flight and the information from the swing monitors today make club fitting even more accurate.

What difference does custom fitting really make?

With irons radically improving with faster and more forgiving faces, and drivers packed with more power and adjust ability, new technology is becoming of little value unless it is custom fitted.

Technology is changing all the time so you have to make sure that new technology mirrors your impact - your thumbprint - to the back of the ball. A custom fit session can soon highlight what suits and doesn’t suit your game/swing.

Custom fitting is for everyone.

It will help improve ball striking, no matter the ability. Trying to figure out a golfer’s swing where ill-fitted clubs do not match the body often encourages players to make unnatural compensations that prevent them from developing proper swing mechanics.

Golf clubs are a hefty investment in 2015, so it makes sense to ensure they are the best possible set for your game.

Yes, it takes time and yes it takes some effort, but you cannot put a price on shooting lower scores.

Davis Love gets a chance to redeem himself Davis Love was appointed Ryder Cup Captain for a second time on Tuesday as the Americans look to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat to Europe at Hazeltine in 2016.

The 50-year-old was in charge in 2012 when the Europeans produced the ‘Miracle at Medinah’ to turn a 10-4 deficit into a 14.5-13.5 victory but it was last year’s 16.5-11.5 defeat at Gleneagles that prompted much soul searching in the American ranks.

An 11-man task force was formed made up of PGA executives, former captains - including Love - and current players including Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson to plot a new way forward for America in the biennial contest.

But Love believes it is the new spirit of togetherness created by the process that will provide dividends, beginning in 2016 when he goes head-to-head with European counterpart and friend Darren Clarke.
