Rickie Fowler is confident he can break his major duck after winning the Players Championship.

The American was forced into a play-off at TPC Sawgrass but beat Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner after extra holes, sealing the win with a birdie on the infamous 17th green.

The victory came a week after the 26-year old was voted joint most overrated player on Tour, alongside Ian Poulter, by fellow professionals.

“I laughed at the poll, but I was always looked at as only having one win on tour, and I always felt that I needed to put myself in position to win more often,” Fowler said.

“I look at this event as basically like a major. It has the major feel, obviously one of the best fields we play all year, on a tough golf course. This will definitely give me momentum going into the US Open (18-21 June) and makes me feel confident about being in this situation and taking care of business.” Rickie Fowler delved into a full bag of Cobra equipment en route to landing the biggest title of his career at the Players Championship.

The 26-year-old American played his final six holes in six under before clinching his second PGA Tour title in a play-off over Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner at TPC Sawgrass.

Using Cobra’s new Fly – Z + driver, Fowler moved the adjustable flip weight to the forward position to alter the centre of gravity and promote less spin off the tee - and averaged 295 yards with the big stick.

He also relied on his Cobra Tour Trusty wedges, particularly when using his pitching wedge to birdie the 17th hole on three occasions on Sunday (once in regulation play and twice in the play-off).

With some of the top players not competing it’s difficult not to see Rory Mc Ilroy winning this weekend. With a good track record at this venue he will take all the beating but 3/1 seems a little short. Better value can found with Henrik Stenson at 12/1 without Mc Ilroy.
