Rory McIlroy is a major doubt for the Open Championship at St. Andrews after injuring his ankle playing football. The world number one posted a picture on Instagram and also tweeted to say he has “total rupture of left ATFL (ankle ligament) and associated joint capsule damage in a soccer kickabout with friends on Saturday.

“Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day. Rehab already started. Working hard to get back as soon as I can.” A spokesman for McIlroy said he will miss this week’s Scottish Open but has not yet ruled out playing in the Open Championship. The 26-year-old is the defending Open champion and also holds the US PGA title, while Jordan Spieth is the Masters and US Open holder. Open fans were savouring a match-up between the world’s top two when the third major of the year takes place in Scotland from 16-19 July.

McIlroy missed the cut at the Honda Classic, the BMW PGA Championship and the Irish Open this season but also won the World Golf Championships Match Play and the Wells Fargo Championship in May. He finished fourth at the Masters and joint ninth at last month’s US Open.

Jordan Spieth, who won the Masters and US Open this year, does not believe his task will be any easier because of McIlroy’s absence.

“For me, it doesn’t change anything,” he said. “It’s still just as challenging. It’s still a major championship and there is a lot of unbelievable talent. I obviously wish he was there.” “It kind of dampens it. You want the defending champion, much less the best player in the world at the event,” the world number two told the Golf Channel.

“You want all fields to be full strength no matter who it is. Losing the number one player in the world for a major championship would be tough.” Kids Summer Golf Camps McCool Golf Academy are now taking bookings for this years series of kids golf camps at Enniskillen Golf Club; Camp 2 : 22nd, 23rd & 24th July 9.30am-11am Camp 3 : 19th, 20th & 21st August 9.30am-11am Additional dates for Blacklion Golf Club Camps can be found on our Facebook page: The Golf Cabin For more details and bookings call Enniskillen Pro Shop on 028 66325250 or email liam@thegolfcabin.co.uk
