Ederney man Declan McKeever enjoyed double All Ireland success recently at the All Ireland Golf Challenge in Waterford Castle, claiming the All Ireland GAA Masters Singles as well as the All Ireland GAA Team award.

This Competition is regarded as the Elite All Ireland GAA golf competition for Gaels throughout Ireland and abroad and and it also offers competitors the chance to win a fully recognised Senior All Ireland GAA winners medal from Croke Park. The event has become the quintessential tournament to accompany the All-Ireland Senior Football and Hurling Championships withe the Finals fittingly scheduled between the two Croke Park Showdowns in September.

The competition was held over three days in difficult conditions of wind and rain.

Declan, representing Fermanagh, clinched the Singles title on the Thursday with a score of 40 before helping his team, Castlederg, to the Overall team title with a winning score of 175.

All the team have official GUI Handicaps and play out of Donegal Golf Club, Murvagh.

The team prize was a training weekend for Castlederg GAA in Derg Isle, County Clare worth £10,000. The winning team also received an all expenses paid weekend in Waterford Castle.

Teams from all over Ireland and England and teams from as far away as New York and Chicago took part in the competition. The winnners’ medals were presented by Kilkenny legend Eddie Keher while the likes of Dublin great Barney Rock, Monaghan’s Nudie Hughes and Eddie Brennan of Kilkenny were also present.
