Enniskillen Motor Club’s Campbell Contracts Rally Time Trial was won by Jonny Leonard in a Mitsubishi, after the local driver posted the fastest time on each of the four tests.
Almost fifty starters tackled the Ederney based event, with the best two times from four runs around the 1.1 mile stage counting towards their total time.
Leonard was coming into the event off the back of a frustrating Lurgan Park Rally but he was immediately at the top of the timesheets on his home event, posting a time three seconds faster than his nearest challenger.
It was a Mitsubishi dominated fight for the overall positions, with the similar cars of Gareth Mimnagh, Trevor Elliott and Dermot O’Hagan providing the main competition.
Mimnagh came closest to challenging for the lead, posting a time two hundredth of a second slower than Leonard on stage three, but he was unable to overall him and had to settle for second spot three seconds adrift at the finish.
Trevor Elliott claimed third just over a second ahead of O’Hagan.
The class battles throughout the field were just as closely contested, with little to separate many of the crews.
Class one was won by Jason Dickson in his Fiesta ahead of James McGovern.
Class three was one of the most tightly contested of the day, with Leroy Mills and Martin Collins trading tenths of a second all day.
Both drivers got progressively faster throughout the day, but it was Leroy Mills that pipped his rival on the final stage, taking the win by just over one second, with Nigel Mills in third.
In class four Mervyn Galbraith coasted to victory ahead of Travis Humphrey and Daryl McCanny, but class five was another closely fought affair.
Stephen Dickson in his Ford fiesta held the advantage going into the last stage of the rally, but Andrew McMahon had saved the best until last, and took almost three seconds out of the leader to snatch the top spot.
Alan McMahon took third in class.
In the Ford Escort dominated class six Declan Campbell put in a convincing display, posting the fastest time in each of the four stages to claim the top spot. Tony McKenna and Dara Campbell took second and third.
Class seven was another to be decided on the final test.
Brendan Campbell held a slender lead going into the last one mile of competitive action.
However, Patrick O’Brian in his G3 Escort produced his best run of the day when it was really needed to claim a slender class win, with Campbell finishing up in second and Ronnie Coulter a further second adrift in third.
