Local short circuit specialist, Gary Robinson, was invited by the M.C.U.I to ride for the Irish team in the annual Celtic Match Races at Mondello Park last Sunday. The Tempo man was one of only two riders from Northern Ireland to form part of the eight man team, who were triumphed in beating off teams from Scotland, Wales and Isle Of Man, to claim the Manx Sword Of State. Robinson qualified third fastest in the Irish squad, in horrible wet slippery conditions, at the Co. Kildare circuit, and notched up crucial points in the race which was hindered by a string of red flag incidents.
"The track was extremely slippery," said Gary. "The race was restarted five times due to crashes. On the fourth restart I got hit from behind by an overseas competitor and subsequently fell off but thankfully the damage was minimum and I was OK to continue. "
The Celtic Match Races were first held in 1979 on the old Jurby Airfield circuit on the Isle Of Man, to celebrate the millennium of Tynwald, the Manx Parliament. Every year since, the four Celtic nations have competed for the full size replica of the Manx Sword of State.
The Celtic Match races marks the end of another successful season for Gary. " I've had a really relaxed year and I'm happy with my progress," said Gary. "Although sponsorship was at an all time low this season, we've pulled through OK but I'll be seeking to take on additional sponsors for the 2010 season which I'm excited about already. I'd like to sincerely thank all my sponsors, friends and family for yet another successful season."
