Shane McGirr produced a giant killing performance in his Toyota Starlet to claim fifth overall and first in class on last weekend's Fivemiletown Spring Rally.

The local driver made the most of competing on home territory to finish among more powerful machinery, one place ahead of the Mitsubishi of Marc Johnston. Enniskillen co driver Martin McGarrity partnered Donemana'a Paul Britton to third spot, behind winner Ian Cochrane and Frank Kelly.

The event, highly regarded by competitors for the quality of its stages, consisted of eight tests held in Mullaghfad, Crocknagrally, Jenkin Hill and Doon forests. Conditions for this year's event proved very challenging due to freezing fog, snow and ice on many of the stages, which reduced the 73 starters to just 47 by the end of the day.

Further afield, Richard Cathcart was scheduled to contest the Sunseeker Raly in England this weekend. The Enniskillen driver had intended to drive a Subaru WRC on the forestry event based in Bournemouth but work commitments have meant he has had to withdraw his entry, and instead will return to his Group N Subaru for the opening round of the British Rally Championship, the Bulldog Rally at the end of March.
