Following a disappointing start to his British Rally Championship campaign, Alastair Fisher finally kick started his season with a second placed finish on last weekend's Jim Clarke International Rally, one placed ahead of Enniskillen's Barry McNulty who navigated Keith Cronin to third overall.
The Trillick driver has started the Irish Tarmac Championship in style and is leading the series, but it had been a different story on the mainland. The Bulldog International ended on stage six with gearbox failure and differential problems brought his involvement in the Pirelli International Rally to a premature end, but he hit back on the championship's first tarmac rally of the year to equal his best ever finish in the series.
The first day of the rally witnessed a battle between the leading four contenders Fisher, Cronin, Craig Breen and Gyndaf Evans. It was Cronin and co-driver Barry McNulty who held an early advantage, but their hopes of outright success were to flounder on a Scottish bank. In the final stage on Friday, the pair slid off in the darkness, losing a spotlight, puncturing a wheel and losing a minute and a half to their rivals. Craig Breen inherited the lead, but when his engine expired Alastair found himself leading. It was a short lived spell at the top of the leaderboard however. Evans, who was fighting back from an early double puncture, eased ahead of the local Mitsubishi driver when a misfire started to cause valuable seconds to eke away, and the fifty year old Welsh veteran eventually emerged thirty seconds clear. Keith Cronin and Barry McNulty took third place over a minute further back, but their points haul keeps them in contention for overall championship honours.
The next round of the series is Rally Isle of Man in July.
