Fifth for Jennings at Lurgan Park

Garry Jennings claimed fifth overall at last weekend's Lurgan Park Rally, with Enniskillen navigator Martin McGarrity partnering Wesley Patterson to sixth place.

Having sold his Group N Mitsubishi Garry hired a Subaru World Rally Car from Kenny McKinstry for the single venue event, and adapted quickly to his new mount, finishing within fourteen seconds of event winner Darren Gass.

"We had a good enough run and weren't far away even though the car was giving a bit of bother," said Garry. "It was missing a bit and the fuel pressure was low, but I was happy enough and the times were OK. We were neat and tidy and that was what my aim was. Normally in the park someone makes a mistake, but this year the top five all had clean runs and there was very little separating us."

Garry's opening stage time put him into an early fourth position but on the second test former Irish Tarmac Champion Eugene Donnelly knocked him down to fifth, where he remained for the remainder of the eight stage rally.

"I just wanted to get round and do no damage, because it is a lot different driving round there in a Group N car than a World Rally Car," he explained. "You really have to concentrate on getting your gearing right on the corners, but our top speeds were same as Kenny McKinstry's, although there were a couple of hairpins I took in first gear and he took in second. I'd like to get another run out in the car and do a rally before the end of the year."

Martin McGarrity claimed the top two wheel award, co-driving Wesley Patterson to a comfortable class victory in his Ford Escort.
