Lee Johnston has continued his good recent form by claiming two top ten finishes from three races at this year’s TT Races in the Isle of Man. After claiming 13th in the opening Superbike race, Lee took eighth in the Superbike race and followed that up with fifth place on Tuesday evening’s Superstock outing.

The former Maguiresbridge rider travelled to the most famous road race event in the world on the back of a win at the North West 200, and he has continued to impress on the island despite this year being only his second competitive appearance at the legendary venue.

“It’s been going pretty good so far,” acknowledged Lee. “That was sort of the aim before we got here, that we would get top ten, top eight, top six. That would be reasonable results, and we have done that so far. If we can keep that up and keep going we will be happy. We are slowly making progress but there is so much to learn. I know where I am and we are not looking for feet any more, we are looking for inches of road. I’m getting there.” Lee demonstrated his potential in the practice session when he topped the timesheets in the Supersport session. “I was a little surprised with that to be honest. I didn’t expect to be on that pace,” he admitted.

The first competitive race of the week was the Superbike race, but Lee encountered some problems with his bike and had to be content with 13th overall and an average speed of 124 miles per hour for the six lap race. “We had a few issues in that race and we struggled a little bit,” he said. “We just didn’t have enough time to set the bike up. Because we were concentrating on the Superbikes we sort of neglected the Superbike race but now that we have had a race on it we have some data to go on so we should be expecting a top ten in the next Superbike race.” The Supersport race presented Lee with an opportunity to break into the top ten, and he grabbed it with a eighth placed finish, despite having to be content with wet roads and low lying mist.

Tuesday’s race was the Superstock event, and Lee made further progress to finish fifth and capture his best ever TT result. “Everything went perfect,” he admitted. “We had a good pit stop and the bike feels mega. I’m really happy with it.” Lee will take to the track three more times this week in the Superbike, Supersport and Superstock races, and if he continues to make progress a podium may yet be within his grasp.
