Garry Jennings in highflying action during the Mayo Stages Rally

Garry Jennings moved to the top of the Group N National Rally Championship after claiming maximum points on last weekend"s Mayo Stages Rally.

The Ballinamallard driver failed to complete his previous event following mechanical problems, but there was no such dramas on this occasion and he defeated all his championship rivals after a relatively trouble free run. Gareth MacHale won Group N on the rally, but the Dubliner is not registered for the championship so Garry"s performance saw him claim maximum points.

'It was a good rally, but some of the conditions were treacherous,' he said. 'The first stage was cancelled because of snow, but apart from that it was alright. The car was a bit sluggish off the start line but she would clear herself, and apart from that we had a clean run.'

His nearest challenger in the early stages was local driver Tom Muldoon, but when he retired on the fourth stage Garry found himself with a 24 second lead over Danny McBride. It was an advantage he was to extend throughout the day, eventually finishing fifth overall and over two and a half minutes ahead of McBride.

Although not committing himself to the entire series Garry has now tackled both of the first two rounds, and tops the standings alongside Kevin Kelleher despite recording a non-finish on the first round in Birr. Another good finish on the next round in Kerry and Garry could well decide to continue his championship challenge throughout the year.
