In the first games of the season in the new look Border Counties League our two local teams Clogher Valley and Enniskillen both notched up convincing victories.

Enniskillen hosted new comers to the league Dungannon at Celtic Park while Clogher Valley had Letterkenny as opponents in Fivemiletown.

Enniskillen 6 points, 79 shots Dungannon 1 point, 32 shots

Newcomers Dungannon travelled to Celtic Park on Wednesday for their first game and found the home team in superb form in this opening game of the season. Reigning champions Enniskillen just missed out on the maximum seven points by one shot in the game between home skip David Dickson"s rink and opposing Dungannon rink skipped by Martin McKenna.

For Enniskillen, Roly Livingston"s rink of Gerry Rasdale, Maurice Brown and Ivor Armstrong chalked up the win of the evening when the romped home with an believable 28 shots to three victory over Dungannon"s Betty Jennings who could only manage to win one end out of the total 15 ends played. Meanwhile Wilfie Crawford"s rink were level at three shots each after the fourth end against A. McKiver but brilliantly collected a useful six shots in the fifth to cruise to victory by a 17 shots to seven margin. Wilfie was well supported by Tom McGrath, Jack Shaw and William Harpur.

On rink four, Eric Hamilton"s team consisting of Teresa McCourt, Alex Morrow and Dessie Brown were cruising against Dungannon"s M Burrows and were 10 shots up before their opponents graced the scoreboard in the fifth end. Eric"s rink controlled the remainder of the game and ended with a 22 shots to nine victory.

In the closest game of the evening, the home side"s rink of Robert Wilson, Joe Reilly, Janet Brown and skipped by David Dickson were having a real end to end game against Dungannon"s M McKenna. At the finish of the ninth end, David"s rink found themselves nine shots to three down, but in a brilliant fight back levelled the score to nine shots each and three ends remaining. Unfortunately for David"s rink they dropped a four in the 13th end and despite winning the last two ends, lost by a single shot 13 shots to 12. A pleasing result for Enniskillen in their efforts to retain the Border Counties title.

Clogher Valley 5 points, 61 shots Letterkenny 2 points, 44 shots

Clogher Valley Bowling Federation had Letterkenny as visitors last Wednesday evening and in a closely contested game, they were very content to chalk up five points. Having won two and lost the other two games, the Fivemiletown based team collected the three points on having the better overall shots.

Clogher Valley"s best result of the evening came from Matt Livingstone"s rink of R McAnenelly, K Givens and Harold Nelson when they convincingly defeated Letterkenny"s D O"Kane. Winning 10 out of the fifteen ends played, Matt"s rink were the more consistent throughout and deservedly won by a 19 shots to six margin.

On rink one, Billy Dunlop and his rink of V Kirkpatrick, W McFarland and Maurice Malone were having a close affair against Wm McHugh. At the end of the eighth end it was anybody"s game with the score standing at 10 shots to eight with the advantage to Billy"s rink.

The winning end came for the Clogher Valley rink when they superbly collected a five in the 11th end and went on from there to win easily by 20 shots to 11.

A "ding dong battle" meanwhile was taking place on rink three where Gladys Dunlop, Pat McElroy, Billy Kirkpatrick and skip Ernie Clarke had a Letterkenny rink skipped be J Marshall to contend with, and with the Letterkenny rink adapting to the all weather surface brilliantly Ernie"s rink just couldn"t manage to get into a position of controlling this game. With two ends left to play, the Letterkenny rink had raced into a six shot advantage and despite the Clogher Valley rink pulling back a four in the penultimate end followed by a single in the last, they just lost out on a better result by a single shot.

In the last game of the evening Frances Cartwright, Albert Browne, Blaney Cartwright and skip John Burrell were competing in another close affair against P. McGranaghan.

At the half way stage, the result could have gone either way with the Letterkenny rink just having a single shot lead, seven shots to six. Unfortunately for John"s rink they lost the following four ends and went into a seven shot deficit and although the gallantly fought back with a three and a single it was too high a mountain to climb and lost out by four shots 14 shots to 10.

With Matt Livingston and Billy Dunlop"s excellent victories, Clogher Valley bagged the overall along with their two wins to collect a useful five points against a very good Letterkenny side.
