Kyle Lafferty opened his Glasgow Rangers account for the season on Saturday with a late double in the 6-1 rout of Motherwell at Ibrox.
The Northern Ireland international replaced Kris Boyd in the 70th minute and within five minutes of his introduction got on the scoresheet, tapping in at the back post following unselfish work by Kirk Broadfoot. And with two minutes to go he rounded off the scoring in an emphatic victory for the 'Ger's as he latched on to a Da Marcus Beasley's lofted pass and clipped the ball past the goalkeeper from outside the box.
The victory moved Rangers four points ahead of Old Firm rivals Celtic at the top of the SPL, with Celtic unable to close the gap on Sunday as they lost 2-1 to Hearts, and Lafferty will be hoping to kick on from this and play his part in an important festive programme for Rangers.
Rangers manager Walter Smith feels that the goals will be a big boost to Lafferty.
"Young Kyle Lafferty coming on and getting a couple of goals will do him the world of good as well," said Smith.
The lofty striker will be looking to see more of the action in the coming weeks while fellow Fermanagh man Andy Little will also hope to get some game time having been on the bench since recovering from the injury he sustained while making his debut against Celtic.
The next three games could be pivotal in Rangers' season as they face the three teams below them, including an Old Firm clash, over the Christmas period.
