The Ulster Youth Championships were held in Lisburn over last week-end and three members of the Enniskillen Lakelanders were competing namely Alannah Leonard, Courtney Wilson and Sally Burrell. Indeed, all three were all in sparkling form throughout the weekend and came home with a fine collection of medals and lots of new personal best times.
Alannah Leonard, swimming in the 13 year age group took a fantastic six seconds off her 200m backstroke time to win a well deserved gold medal, finishing in a time of 2.32.47. She also took silver in the final of the 100m backstroke, with another pb. A three second pb in the 200m freestyle put her in seventh place, and she was second reserve for the final of the 100m freestyle.
Courtney Wilson in the 16 year age group swam a determined 100m backstroke final to take silver in a new pb of 1.08.51. Her strong 200m backstroke saw her gain a second silver medal, and she finished fifth in the 100m freestyle final.
Sally Burrell in the 13 year age group came home with three gold medals and one bronze. In the 100m breaststroke final she went into the last turn lying third but a strong underwater pull off the wall left her surfacing just ahead and with a powerful last length she won gold with a two second pb. She won a comfortable gold in the 200IM and with a five second pb in the 200m breaststroke took the third gold. A two second pb in the 100m butterfly gained her bronze.
The girls' success is well deserved because of their commitment to long hours training and is a credit to the hard work of their coach Arunas Savickas.
