The recent Ulster Rugby Awards had plenty of local interest as Kathryn Dane claimed the Ulster Womens Player of the Year.
And Enniskillen's great season saw them recognised in the three team short list for the Sports Club of the Year which was won by Bangor.
It has been a great year for Fermanagh's Dane and it got even better with the award of Ulster Womens Player of the Year. This is an unprecedented feat at only 19 years of age and at such an early stage in her career, but the award is thoroughly deserved when looking at her achievements and progress in the past season. These included a standout debut interprovincial series for Ulster Ladies and stellar performances for Enniskillen and AIL side Old Belvedere which led to an invitation to join the Ireland training squad.
Enniskillen failed to win the Club of the Year award on the night as Bangor took the honours, not an unexpected result given Bangor 1st XV’s success this season which culminated in promotion to senior rugby. However, there was clearly many on the night who expected the Fermanagh side to lift the accolade, and it’s unsurprising when weighing up the success of the club as a whole this season.
For the senior men it was particularly memorable as both the 1st and 2nd XV played cup finals at Kingspan Stadium. In the league the 3rd XV managed a third place finish while the 1st XV secured a momentous second place in the league and were finally granted promotion back to Qualifying One rugby.
Not to be outdone, the Ladies also won Ulster Division 1 unbeaten while the under 16 and 18 boys also claimed league titles, the Under-14s managing an impressive second place finish after struggling for numbers early in the season.  This year also witnessed the emergence of the newly established Under-12 girls who, in their first year, claimed 4 from 4 representing Ulster in a blitz at the Aviva Stadium, not to mention the Enniskillen Elks side for those with learning disabilities who took the field at Kingspan this time last year during half-time of Ulster Vs Munster.
The mini rugby continues to go from strength to strength with huge numbers of kids from Under-7s all the way up to Under-11s spending their Saturday mornings out at the club. Progress off the pitch was plentiful too as the club held it’s most successful event in years with their sell out Charity Boxing night at the Enniskillen Hotel, and just in the last few months installing a state of the art Gym with the aid of funding from the DCAL sport programme.
While Silverware from the Ulster branch eluded them, the nomination alone was a testament to the hard work put in by players, coaches, management and all contributors to make Enniskillen one of the most diverse and inclusive clubs in the country, which will hopefully continue to build following this spectacular season.
