A converted Philip Simpson penalty saw Portora come out on top in a low scoring contest against Regent House on Saturday at Castle Lane to make it through to the quarter-finals of the Northern Bank Ulster Schools Medallion Shield.
Portora were looking to turn over what was deemed to be an impossible 34-5 loss from the start of the season. The home side started well as always with confidence, the players taking ball into contact and running good lines. The home side made it to within 10 metres of the Regent line after slick hands across the backline and a powerful run from Sam Monaghan.
Portora kept the visitors deep in their own half, this pressure resulting in a penalty advantage where quick ball out the backline lead to Richard Armstrong going over for a try.
Unfortunately, the referee decided that Portora had knocked-on in the centre of the pitch and brought them back for the penalty.
However, the home side was shortly presented with another opportunity for points when the referee awarded them a penalty for a Regent infringement, which Phillip Simpson converted for a 3-0 lead. Both teams fought hard for the remainder of the half but neither team faltered in their cover.
The second half saw Portora defending numerous attacks from a strong Regent pack but were united in their defence until the final whistle.
The final score of 3-0 brought a huge cheer from the home supporters.
The team and coaching staff were delighted with the level of support at Castle Lane, it was very much appreciated.
They now face either Royal School Armagh or Dromore High School away on Saturday February 18 in the Quarter-Final of the Medallion Shield.
