Last Sunday saw an exciting finale to a tremendous week of tennis as the Blakes of the Hollow West Ulster Championships came to a close at Enniskillen Tennis Club.

With local club coach Matthew McGann due to appear in all three 'A' Finals, the galleries were full generating an exciting atmosphere throughout the day.

Having beaten last year's champion Gareth McGreevy in the semis, Matthew was hoping to upset the number one seed Karl Donaldson in the final but quickly found himself down by a set as Karl opened up confidenly playing superb error free tennis. However the local man rallied to lead 5-2 in the second but despite a number of good opportunities to level the match, Matthew couldn't find the winners with Karl coming back strong to win the Championship in straight sets.

Matthew was immediately back on court to play the Men's A Doubles with local protege Jared Monaghan in what turned out to be the match of the day against Irvinestown's John Maguire and Butt Hall's Francis Venzon.

The Enniskillen duo got the best of the early exchanges winning an exciting first set 6-4 but again Matthew was out of luck as John rolled back the years to see himelf and Francis retain their doubles title in three crowd pleasing sets.

Perhaps the gruelling schedule of the week caught up with Matthew as he was unable to salvage a win from his third final losing with partner Sopie Murray against the hugely impressive Elaine Chambers and Francis Venzon.

In the B section there was a red letter day for Irvinestown's Frances Taggart as she retained her B Ladies singles title and then went on to complete a rare treble as she won the Ladies Doubles with clubmate Joanne Daly and the mixed doubles with Enniskillen's Donal Burns. Frances was playing her best and most aggressive tennis in years as she dropped only one set across three competitions throughout the week. The mixed was also a first ever open title for the local favoutite Donal and was fitting reward for the strides Donal has made in tennis over the last six months.

The B Men's section was the sole preserve of Enniskillen player Paul Crilly as he followed his eye-catching win in Sligo to add the Men's B singles and quickly followed this up with a win in the Men's B doubles, playing with Butt Hall's Robert Thompson.

As always some of the biggest entry numbers came in the C's with Enniskillen managing two further titles with victories for JR Dundas and Martina Boyd in the mixed and also for Martin Sharkey and Ollie McShea in the Men's Doubles.

Commenting after the event tournament organiser and Enniskillen Club Chairperson Maxine Leary thanked the tournament sponsors Blakes of the Hollow for their wonderful support and also gave special mention to John Maguire and Irvinestown Tennis Club who came to the rescue on Saturday afternoon when all four courts were flooded in Enniskillen demonstrating the close ties and friendship which exists between the local rivals.
