The first day of the Asda West of Ulster Junior Championships saw many debutants take to the stage at the Enniskillen club.

First match on was Luke Dillon against Irvinestown's Ciaran Daly in the U12 singles. The first set proved decisive with Ciaran clinching it in a 7-6 tie-break after a titanic battle and he ran out the deserved winner taking the second set more comfortably 6-1.

Alexandros Stergiopoulos from Donegal and Enniskillen's Jack Balfour had an enthralling encounter in the novice singles with Alexandros just coming out on top 6-4 7-5. Rivals and solid club-mates Tara McConville and Caoimhne McCaffrey traded some long baseline rallies before Tara eventually took the first set 6-4 and capitalised by taking the second set more decisively.

Once again, Conor Rippey showed his strength at singles with a comfortable win over James O'Doherty, who showed some solid form after a lengthy break from the game. The pick of all the matches had to be Alison Glass' win over Sligo's Sue Smith. Both girls played some vintage shots throughout the match and with Sue threatening a comeback in the second set, Alison had just enough experience to close the match out 6-3 6-3.

Eimear Smyth had to pull out all the stops against Irvinestown's Cora Meade in the U16 girls singles eventually taking the match 6-3 6-4. Scott Armstrong from Banbridge overcame the experienced Conan Whitley 6-3 6-4 in the U16 singles. With long rallies the order of the day, Megan Elliott and Ciara Griffin just edged out Hannah Davis and Anna Guette in the novice girls doubles.

Play continues until finals day on Saturday and with good weather forecast beyond the weekend, it is highly unlikely that the centre court roof will be needed at this tournament. Daily barbecues and toasted paninis interspersed with some sunshine should create the holiday atmosphere that will make this a truly memorable week for competitors and parents alike.
