Francis Venzon and Laura Griffin were the big winners as the Fermanagh Open Tennis Tournament reached its conclusion in superb weather conditions on Sunday. Although it wasn't quite as hot as on Centre Court at Wimbledon, summer had definitely arrived in Irvinestown. This year's tournament was sponsored by Flogas and the Manor House Country Hotel and supported by Fermanagh District Council.

The tournament attracted around 130 players from as far afield as Sligo, Galway, Dublin, Lurgan, Belfast and Donegal as well as great support from the local clubs in Enniskillen, Omagh and Irvinestown.

And it was Venzon and Griffin who were to lift the main titles.

Venzon, from Butt Hall claimed the A Mens Singles titleas he beat Enniskillen player Matthew McGann with another Enniskillen player Laura Griffin winning the A Ladies singles, defeating Sophie Murray from Lurgan in the final. Many of the local players won titles including Cora Meade from Irvinestown with a well deserved win in the C Ladies Singles. Her brother Eoin was runner up in the C Men's Singles with Omagh member Adam McQuaid taking this title. Another Irvinestown member, Colleen McCusker won the C2 Ladies event. There were good wins from Enniskillen's Martina Boyd and Ollie McShea in the C Mixed Doubles and Ollie also took the C Mens Doubles title with Martin Sharkey. The A Mens Doubles was won by Adam Donaldson and Matthew McCann from Enniskillen with John Maguire, Irvinestown and Francis Venzon from Butt Hall runners-up. Butt Hall members were very successful in a number of events including a win for Pat Bonner and Julie Griffiths in the C Ladies Doubles and Drew Chambers and Bernard Griffin taking the B Mens Doubles title.

At the presentation on Sunday, club president and Tournament Director, John Maguire, thanked all the players for coming and welcomed the sponsors including Claire Anderson from Manor House Country Hotel and Anthony Mulligan from Flogas. The Chairman of Fermanagh District Council, Councillor Alex Baird and George Stevenson from Ulster Branch Tennis Ireland also attended. John also thanked the tournament committee and all those who helped during the run-up and throughout the event especially Tournament Referee Pete Keogh.

Thanks must go to George Beacom and all the staff of the Bawnacre Centre who looked after everyone so well throughout the week and presented everyone with the customary strawberries and ice-cream on finals day! Thanks were also expressed to Fermanagh District Council for the free use of the courts and tribute paid to sponsors Flogas and Manor House Country Hotel.
