Finals day at Irvinestown tennis club brought to an end a great week of competition and fun activities for all the Junior players who took part in the Fermanagh open tennis event. A total of 127 matches had been played over the week in both round robin and knockout formats with junior competitors aged from 6 to 18 years old taking part from all the local clubs plus Banbridge, Butt Hall, Lurgan, Castlebar, Ballymena ATT, Cavan, Portadown, Milford and Manchester.

The Events were sponsored by Lakeland Leisure, ASC Security, Pillbox and FT Financial Planning with the assistance of Fermanagh District Council.

There was a lot of success for local players with the Griffin girls from Enniskillen and Kyran Maguire, Irvinestown having an outstanding week's play.

Three singles events went to the Griffin family when Amy in the U12 singles beat Louiza Moran from Castlebar in a titanic battle 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 both girls giving everything untill the end. Ciara then won the Novice U14 event in around robin format with the final game resolving the placings when she beat Grace Whaley Irvinestown who finished second with Katie Deane, Lucy Humes and Lucy Donald all playing their part in the event. Finally, Laura Griffin won the U18 Singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Francis Taggert, ending a great day for the family.

Kyran Maguire achieved a great treble when he won the U14 singles, doubles and mixed. He beat friend and club mate Conan Whitley 6-0, 6-3 in a very entertaining singles match, he then partnered Conan to win the boys doubles and finally with Emma Neil Smith ATT Club won the mixed doubles.

Francis Taggert, who has now played her last Junior event, went out on a high when she claimed the U18 mixed event with partner Paul Bannigan, Butt Hall, with Laura Griffin and partner Jared Monaghan runner up.

Paul went on to claim the U18 singles and Jared Monaghan who continues his great season claimed the U16 singles over Ronan McKeever in great match between the friends, 6-4 6-1. They then partnered up to claim the U18 doubles beating Matthew Duffy and Thomas Muldoon in a great boys doubles final 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 and probably the best match over the week.

In the U12 Boys John McSorley Omagh showed his class when he beat a very talented Craig Humes 6-1, 6-3 while Craig then partnered fellow club mate Ciaran Daly to take the U12 doubles title.

Eimear Smyth, Enniskillen came out top in the Girls U14 singles, with her fast flowing ground strokes and movement around the court she beat Bonnie Ramsey from Ballymena ATT 6-3, 6-2 and continued her good form.

The Boys U14 singles novice was won by Irvinestown member Oliver McCaughey in a round Robin Format when in the final match he beat Cormac Taggert 6-4, 6-4, who finished runner-up. Also to compete well in the event were Jay Maguire, Ben Murray and Charles Rodreguez.

The U14 novice doubles was won by Brothers Jarlath and Jay Maguire, Irvinestown.

After all the presentations were made Sinead Maguire Junior Co-ordinator thanked all the players and parents for attending the event and for their great sportsmanship and fun over the week. She thanked the sponsors and the Fermanagh District Council and Bawnacre staff for their continued support to the event.

She made a special presentation to Tournament Director Laura McDowell for her hard work over the past ten years and referee John Maguire. She thanked the Tournament Committee and all those that helped over the week for making it a most enjoyable week for the competitors involved.
