There was plenty of success for the home players as some of the best young tennis players in Ireland took part in the Fermanagh Open Junior Tennis championships hosted by Irvinestown tennis club last week.

This included a hat-trick of titles for Enniskillen’s Amy Griffin while Irvinestown’s Kyran Maguire probably won the game of the week when he edged a three set thriller in the U16 Boys’ final.

Players from all the local clubs plus Monkstown Dublin, Butt Hall, Letterkenny, Lurgan, David Lloyd Belfast, Cavan, City of Derry and Portadown took part in the championships with finals day on Saturday.

Singles Events The most entertaining final on the day came in the U16 boys singles where Kyran Maguire, Irvinestown, playing on home soil, defeated David Keane Monkstown 6/4 6/7 6/4 in a battle of long rallies and hard hitting groundstrokes.

Kyran’s stronger will to win probably edged this encounter as he served out to take the third set 6/4 and claim another Fermanagh title.

The U18 Girls saw Enniskillen members Laura Griffin and Eimear Smyth contest the final match in a round robin event. The first set was evenly matched as both players gave their all and played with great intensity as Laura took the first 7/5. In the second set, Laura took the inititive really early as she broke serve and raced away to win the match 6/1. Kathy Bannigan from Butt Hall also contested this event.

The U18 boys was again a round robin event with four boys contesting and was won by Jack Gannon, Monkstown with Omagh player Cormac Coney finishing runner-up with a few good wins over Thomas Muldoon, Lurgan and Gray Kelly, Monkstown.

In the U14 events, the Girls final was contested between the Griffin sisters Amy and Ciara from Enniskillen. Ciara, having beaten the no 1 seed in the semi final, found older sister in fine form in the final as Amy won 6/2 6/0 and went on to achieve a treble of titles during the day.

In the boys event, Ciaran Daly from Irvinestown played well to reach the final but lost out to an impressive display from Michael Hatrick, City of Derry by 6/2 6/0 Not to be outdone by his bigger brother, Andrew Hatrick won the U12 boys event when he beat Fionnbharr Taggart, Omagh 6/3 6/1 with both boys playing some really good tennis throughout the tournament .

In the Girls U12 singles final No 2 seed Eve Callaghan from Enniskillen defeated Bronagh Smyth, Enniskillen 6/0 6/1 with both girls playing some fine tennis, indeed for Bronagh it was a good week as she beat the No 1 Seed from Belfast to reach the final.

In the Novice Singles three girls from Irvinestown took part Sara Murray , Molly Rodgers and Mellissa Andrassak in a Round Robin event with Mellissa winning while the boys event saw Lurgan brothers Jamie and Jason Henry reach the final with Jamie winning 6/0 6/4.
