When the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals get underway at the 02 in London this weekend, Irvinestown’s Kyran Maguire will have one of the best views of the action.
Maguire has been selected as a ball boy for the tournament and therefore will have a close up view as new world number one Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and others will battle it out for the title.
And it is something that Kyran is really looking forward to.
“The guy who is in charge of Ulster Tennis selected me as one of his two picks and I recently spent a week in Southampton training for it. The training was during practise matches where we were drilled in what we had to do with things like rolling the ball and catching the ball. I’m really looking forward to it and I’m delighted to have been selected,” said Kyran.
Kyran will travel to London prior to Sunday’s opening game and will be there for the week’s duration with the final the following Sunday.
The ball boys and girls are required to be on court for 40 minutes at a time and then they will be replaced by another team of six.
The young Irvinestown lad is not sure what games he will be involved in but he knows who we would like to see.
“The likes of Murray and Djokovic are great role models and it would be brilliant to see them but you also have to concentrate fully on your job and make sure that you are doing it right,” he added.
