Seeded players progress in Fermanagh Open

Fermanagh Open Tennis Championships; The Fermanagh Open Tennis Championships sponsored by Tullana on the Green, Lisnarick and Mahon"s Hotel, Irvinestown, continued this week in Irvinestown. The rain kept at bay for most of the evening and a full nights play was on the cards.

A number of seeded players were on court on Tuesday evening. Matthew McGann from Enniskillen had a comfortable victory against Peter Craig from Butt Hall 6/1 6/1 in the A Men"s singles. The No. 3 seed in the same event Adam Donaldson also won through against Stephenson Cuthbertson from Omagh although Adam lost the 2nd set in a tie break but sealed the match 6/3 in the final set.

The A Men"s Doubles saw the Omagh pairing of Andy Moore and Stephen Cuthbertson take on Peter Fryer from City of Derry and Liam McQuaid from Irvinestown with the younger couple coming through 6/3 6/1.

In the B Ladies singles, there was a marathon match between Louise McGann from Enniskillen and Rebecca Logan from Omagh. Rebecca took the first set but Louise fought back to secure victory and a good win. Rebecca"s mum Rachel did win through in her match against Leonie Madigan from Enniskillen 6/2 6/1. Also in this event two Irvinestown players Kathleen Maguire and Louise Conway recorded victories. In the B Men"s Singles, Peter Craig froham Butt Hall beat Alistair McClurg from Enniskillen 6/4 6/4.

Two Irvinestown players, Laura McDowell and Laura McKinley, in her first open tournament, beat Annmarie Cunningham and Marie Therese McSorley 7/5 6/3 in the C Ladies Doubles.

There was an exciting three setter in the B Men"s Doubles between Noel and Arnold Jackson from Omagh and the younger pairing of Niall Allen and James Duffy from Irvinestown. The Omagh pair won the first set 6/1 but the Irvinestown duo came back in the second set with six straight games. They were four games up in the final set but the Omagh couple came through 6/4. Omagh player Kenny Hicks also saw off a challenge from young Joe Whaley from Irvinestown and won 7/5 6/1.
