In spite of all the rain, last Thursday saw a bumper crowd taking part in the Hallowe'en American tournament at Enniskillen Tennis Club last Thursday night. A strong start was made by Ruth Armstrong and Moira McAdam who overcame Enid Redmond and Patricia Durnien. One of the new recruits to tennis, Yvonne Masterson teamed up with Ruth Elliott and duly overcame Mohammed and Bernie Hall 3-2. Maxine Boyd provided the anchor when she partnered the ever-improving JR Dundas to a 3-2 win over Joanne and Allen Reynolds. Neville Crawford and Leonie Madigan enjoyed a good win over Alan Reynolds and Sonja Hateboer with some fine baseline play.
The unlucky man of the night was Dominic Burns who was just edged out by Connor MacMahon for a place in the final. Indeed Connor all but threw his chance away at the last hurdle when losing out 1-4 to Jenny Humphries and Hugh Maguire. However, his good performances earlier in the night proved just enough to see him through. The only players to win all their matches en route to the final were Ruth Armstrong and Donal Burns and both impressed throughout.
The final was an enthralling encounter because it brought together the two individuals in the club who have made outstanding improvements to their game in recent times- the ageless Jenny Humphries whose groundstrokes and volleys drew admiration from all present and Donal Burns whose powerpacked serve has been known to penetrate even the strongest wire. With Ruth Armstrong partnering Donal and Connor McMahon partnering Jenny this match took no prisoners - and it was Jenny and Conor who emerged victorious.
The night concluded with one of Mama (Susie) Keys' specialities - a chicken madras curry which was thoroughly enjoyed by all present.
