The Longford senior Tennis championships took place last week and with entries from far and wide the scene was set for some top class tennis. Enniskillen's Matthew McGann was seeded number four for the event and he progressed comfortably in straight sets through the first two rounds of the competition.
The semi final was against Dublin's Declan Breen who was in fine form after a confident victory over the number two seed in the previous round. However, Matthew took control early in the match with some hard hitting ground strokes and ended up winning comfortably 6/3 6/1. The number one seed Tomasz Kowalewski had an early exit in the top half of the draw leaving the way clear for the number three seed Fergus Murphy who took full advantage and made it through to the final where he met Matthew.
The difficult weather conditions played their part in the final making it hard to time the ball and the first set went to a tie break. Matthew held his nerve and took the tie break 7/1. This seemed to be a decisive moment in the match and Matthew cruised to a victory and won the title 7/6 6/1.
Matthew also came runner up in the men's doubles and the mixed doubles. Partner Sonja Hateboer showed some real flair in the early rounds and they reached the final with some good wins along the way. The final was a very closely fought affair, but local pairing Noel Strange and Emma O'Rourke just pulled through in the end.
