Maguire in fine form at Ballycastle

Irvinestown's John Maguire had a fine week at Ballycastle as he never even dropped a set on his way to claiming two titles at the Ulster Grass Court Championships. Maguire clinched the Over 45s singles title as well as the Over 35s doubles crown in Ballycastle ans it sets him up well for the upcoming Tyrone Senior Championships in Omagh.
John comfortably came through his first game in the sngles competition with a 6-0, 6-1 victory, and he had a good break in the semi-final when his opponent had to pull out of the tournament, giving Maguire a passage staraight into the final.
In the final Maguire came up against John Cunningham from Bangor who had been in fine form in the previous rounds, having accounted for the number one and number four seeds but the Irvinestown man proved his worth as he secured a 6-2, 6-3 win.
"I played well in the final," said John. "I serve volleyed as much as I could, which is what you have to do on grass, and it worked well for me. Having lost two singles finals here it was great to finally clinch one."
In the doubles, John joined up with Mike Breslin from Leeds and they eased their way into the final with a 6-2, 6-2 win. In the final the pair came up against Muckamore Tennis Club's Andrew Tisdale and Andrew Moore and following a good close encounter it was Maguire and Brelin who prevailed on a 6-4, 7-5 score.
"Overall, I would be delighted with how things went for me and I'm now looking forward to Omagh and the Senior Tyrone Championships," he added.
