There was good local success at the Fermanagh Open Tennis tournament last week with Irvinestown's John Maguire, partnered by Francis Venzon, taking the Mens A Doubles while fellow Irvinestown player Andrea Irvine achieved two titles, winning the C Ladies Singles and also the C Mixed Doubles along with partner Brendan King also from Irvinestown. Andrea also went on to win the Player of the Tournament award in recognition of her achievements in winning these titles in her first tournament since resuming playing tennis just seven months ago.

The Fermanagh Open Tennis Tournament sponsored by Flogas and Manor House Country Hotel took place over the last week and culminated in Finals Day on Sunday at Irvinestown Lawn Tennis Club.

No 1 seeds John Maguire and Francis Venzon claimed the A Mens Doubles title 6/4 6/3 beating Jonny Curry, Bangor and Andy Moore, Omagh. The longest match of the tournament was a marathon between Ollie McShea from Enniskillen and Joe Grimes from Cavan.

Club President and Tournament Director John Maguire who was partnered with Nikki Hawkes from Omagh were defeated by Francis Venzon and Elaine Chambers from Butt Hall in the A Mixed Doubles 6/0 6/1.

Omagh players also took the A Ladies Singles with Nikki Hawkes winning and David Ward taking the A Mens Singles title.

Presentation of prizes took place in The Pavilion at the Bawnacre Centre on Sunday evening. Pete Keogh, Tournament Referee welcomed everyone to the presentation and introduced Councillor Alex Baird, representing Fermanagh District Council who provided free use of the courts for the event. Councillor Baird paid tribute to everyone who had participated and congratulated all the winners and the organisers of the tournament. Also present were the sponsors, David Begley from the Manor House Country Hotel and Paul Ruegg from Flogas who presented the prizes to all the winners. Councillor Baird paid specific thanks to the sponsors for supporting the tournament, without whom it would be impossible to run such an event.

Thanks was extended to George Beacom and all the staff at the Bawnacre who looked after everyone during the week and provided refreshments and support as they do each year.

John Maguire, Tournament Director was also presented with a gift in appreciation of his tireless efforts to get the tournament scheduled and dealing with all the demands of running such a tournament.
