Having just competed in the final event of the Ulster tennis season, The Belfast Hardcourt Championships at the Windsor Club in Belfast, Irvinestown Junior Tennis Club member Kyran Maguire was presented last weekend with the Best Player Award in recognition of his achievements over the season and also at the event where he reached the singles semi final and the doubles final.

A father and son have recevied call ups to represent Ulster at tennis within weeks of each other.

Two of Fermanagh’s top young tennis players Eimear Smyth and Kyran Maguire (pictured above) have been rewarded for their excellence and hard work with a call up to the Ulster U14 Provincial team to play at the All-Ireland Provincials in Castlebar next week.

Enniskillen and Irvinestown Tennis Clubs both enjoyed great success at the Tyrone Championships last weekend with various honours coming in different grades for a number of competitors from the two Fermanagh clubs.

The Fermanagh Open Tennis Tournament, sponsored by Flogas and the Manor House Country Hotel, reached its climax on Sunday at the Bawnacre Centre in Irvinestown. There were entries from over 100 players in this popular tournament run by Irvinestown Lawn Tennis Club and there was to be local success including Irvinestown’s John Maguire who teamed up with Francis Venzon to win the Mens A Doubles title.

The West of Ulster Junior Championships at Enniskillen Tennis Club proved to be a highly competitive event with participants coming from 13 different clubs extending from Belfast and Dundalk across to Donegal, Sligo and Manorhamilton. Again the level of ability continues to rise reflecting the increase in the number of clubs with resident coaches. Local Fermanagh clubs held up well and many of the top prizes went to the Irvinestown and Enniskillen clubs.

The annual Fermanagh Open Tennis Tournament sponsored by Flogas and Manor House Country Hotel started at the weekend in perfect weather conditions. Play continues all week with the finals looming at the same time as those in Wimbledon. The Pavilion at the Bawnacre Centre saw players from a number of clubs from Sligo to Cavan, Omagh, Butt Hall, Enniskillen and Irvinestown. Next weekend will see competitors travelling from further afield – City of Derry and Belfast.

The Ulster Schools’ Tennis Cup was played to completion this week. The Schools’ Cup is Northern Ireland’s biggest team tennis event with schools participating from all over the province.

Blessed with glorious sunshine all day, last Sunday saw players from Enniskillen, Irvinestown and Omagh come together in a one off event to celebrate local player Matthew McGann’s forthcoming trip to Palm Beach, Florida where he will become the first Fermanagh player to represent Ireland in an international tennis tournament.

Matthew McGann claimed his second national title of the year when he won the Over 35 Men’s Single at the Irish National Veterans Championship at Lansdowne Lawn Tennis Club in Dublin, a competition which attracted players from all over Ireland.
