Toner brings musical inspiration to the Ardhowen

COUNTRY singing sensation, Lisa McHugh, performs to a sell-out audience tonight and the very talented Anthony Toner performs in the Gallery Bar on Saturday. LISA MCHUGH IN CONCERT Lisa McHugh performs to a sell-out audience tonight at 8pm. She is determined to make country cool as she builds a huge fan base with live performances, TV appearances and recordings. Having launched her band a little over two years ago she already has recorded two albums and nine singles; one, entitled ‘Why’d Ya Come in Here’, has over 150,000 hits on YouTube. She has appeared on the prestigious Grand Ole Opry as guest of her friend in Nashville, Gene Watson and she has just recently released her newest album ‘A Life That’s Good’. ANTHONY TONER The Belfast-based singer and accomplished guitarist, Anthony Toner, is back on the road with a brand new album, ‘Miles and Weather’. As always, expect some background material and shared experiences, superb guitar playing, singing and songs that will move and inspire. Anthony’s set will include new material alongside old favourites such as ‘Sailortown’, ‘Well Well Well’ and ‘East of Louise’. Anthony’s last collection, ‘Sing Under the Bridges’, was short-listed for the Northern Ireland Music Prize, while the new collection deals with themes of distance, connection and disconnection, wear and tear. Dundrum’s finest returns to The Ardhowen with the first run of his new stand up show ‘Help’ on Thursday, June 4, at 8pm. Join the former psychology graduate as he attempts to rewrite his rules for love, life and happiness. As this is stand-up the show may contain adult reference and is suitable for ages 16 and over. THE RONNIE GREER BLUES BAND The Ardhowen welcomes back blues legend Ronnie Greer and his band for another blistering night of rhythm and blues in the Gallery Bar on Friday, June 5, at 9pm. Ronnie wrings the last drop of emotion out of his guitar work, while still keeping the toes tapping. His distinctive guitar style, melding searing Chicago style licks with be-bop jazz inflections, has been critically acclaimed as world class. His band, comprising of keyboard wizard John McCullough, bass player Alan Hunter and drummer Colm Fitzpatrick, will be accompanied by special guest, singer/songwriter, Matt McGinn. After releasing his début album ‘Livin’’ in 2011 to much acclaim, Matt McGinn has enjoyed much success touring worldwide, performing with everyone from Nanci Griffith to Kim Richey. Expect a night of blues, roots, and a little jazz based music, played with style and conviction by the best in the business. “Proper blues from a proper bluesman” as Ralph McLean says. THE THREE BEARS Clydebuilt Puppet Theatre presents The Three Bears on Saturday, June 6, at 3pm. The metal world of Goldilicks meets the lovely natural wooden world of three Bears - the result, a very sticky adventure all round. Happily they become friends and cook up the most wonderful porridgy recipe together. The cook Steve, bakes in the kitchen and finds time to tell a wonderful story using kitchen implements in a very intriguing and unusual way. This delightful children’s production is suitable for children aged three to seven years.

Fermanagh’s Matty James to play Sunflowerfest

ORGANISERS of Sunflowerfest have confirmed that Fermanagh musician Matty James has been chosen to perform at this year’s festival. Known for his on and off stage charisma and songs including ‘Leaving,’ ‘Same Old Me,’ and ‘Never Learn’ from his acclaimed 2014 debut album ‘Last One to Die’, Matty has continuously toured across the UK, Ireland and France and has made appearances at festivals including Strummercamp, Camden Rocks and Rebellion. A master of his craft, Matty adds to the diversity and strength of this year’s festival line-up for Hillsborough-based Sunflowerfest. “We are delighted to welcome Matty James to this year’s Sunflowerfest,” said festival organiser, Michael Magowan. “Known for our enthusiasm for music of all genres, Matty will add to the array of music featured at Sunflowerfest which includes musicians and artists from metal and folk to indie, hip hop, reggae, punk and world music genres.” Sunflowerfest is especially known for its unwavering support of the local music scene in Northern Ireland, where it offers a platform for up-and-coming talent to be seen and heard as well as great opportunities for young musicians to meet and interact with well-known figures from the UK and Ireland’s music scenes. Sacred and secular unite with Donaghadee Male Choir

COLIN GEDDIS Internet sensation, Colin Geddis, creator and star of ‘Gedzilla Films’ and ‘The Colin Geddis Show’ Podcast, returns to The Ardhowen Theatre Gallery Bar with his brand new hilariously inappropriate stand-up comedy show tomorrow at 9pm. DONAGHADEE MALE VOICE CHOIR The Donaghadee Male Voice Choir performs at The Ardhowen on Saturday at 8pm with accompanist Ivan Black and compere Gene Fitzpatrick. Founded in 1932, Donaghadee Male Voice Choir has over 70 members and its repertoire embraces both sacred and secular music including popular, folk, traditional and operatic works. Musical Director, Robert Wilson MBE, who was decorated for his services to music, has been at the helm since 1968 and has guided the choir to many international successes having competed as far afield as Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Malta, Poland and Spain as well as in the UK and Ireland, amassing a total of 46 first places. Festival beyond our Wildest dreams

Once again Sean Doran has waved his magic wand and created a festival beyond our Wildest dreams. In Enniskillen, the May Bank holiday weekend celebration of Oscar Wilde is now a fixture and a fitting companion to the annual Happy Days International Beckett festival which takes place in the town during late July/early August. Oscar Fingal O’Flaghertie Wills Wilde and Samuel Barclay Beckett, were both boarders at Portora Royal School; Wilde from 1864 – 1871 and Beckett from 1920 – 23.
