Under the baton of eminent professional horn player and conductor, Michael Thompson, the Ulster Youth Orchestra (UYO) is to give give a free public concert in St Fanchea's College, Enniskillen next month. Taking place at 7.45pm on Friday April 9, the programme will include Two Ulster Airs by Joan Trimble, the Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major by Mozart (solo violin: Ciaran McCabe) and the Symphony No2 by Beethoven. Anyone wishing to reserve a seat, should contact email address: uyoni@tiscali.co.uk Seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
Local young musicians will be taking part. Clarinet player Eve Vieltschnig from Enniskillen is currently taking a gap year to have further tuition from Christopher King, former princiapl clarinettist of the Ulster Orchestra and to prepare for entrance into music college.
Percussionist Kieran Leonard is also to play. he actually turned to percussion after a UYO outreach programme in Protadown. He was recentyl successful in hi saudition for Trinity College of Music in London, where he will be taking up his place in September. And Kristan Swain, who now studie with Colin Fleming, Princiapl Flautist with the Ulster Youth Orchestra, will also be performing.
The Orchestra has received sponsorship from the Foyle Foundation and a lottery grant from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
The UYO will also hold a special day of workshops for violinists, cellists and woodwind players in St Fanchea's College, Enniskillen, on Thursday April 8. The day will consist of group rehearsals, workshops and masterclasses with three guest UYO tutors, Joanne Quigley (Violin), Peter Dixon (Cello) and John Orford (Woodwind). Attendance at these workshops is free of charge and is open to violinists, cellists and woodwind players from all over Northern Ireland. The day will run from 10.30am to 3.30pm. The UYO offers this event as part of its ongoing regional outreach education programme. It is anticipated that many young musicians from Grade 2 upwards will attend and be inspired by the professionals.
And the Award winning Ulster Youth Orchestra, Northern Ireland's national youth orchestra, will be running a residential course in the Clinton Centre, Enniskillen, from Tuesday April 6 to Saturday April 10, 2010. 42 young musicians from all over Northern Ireland will come together for a period of intensive musical training, working with some of the most famous names in the professional world of music and professors from music colleges in Great Britain.
