This week's helping of comedy comes from the talented Holywood Players and Noel Coward's sumptuous comedy 'Fallen Angels' which plays at Ardhowen Theatre this Thursday 5th, Friday 6th and Saturday 7th August at 8.00pm.
The Fallen Angels of the title are Julia and Jane, wealthy, elegant, married women, best friends and troubled with the 20 year itch (nowadays it is the seven year itch, but marriages lasted longer in those days). They are bored with their dull husbands and long for a bit of excitement in their lives. So when a postcard arrives from a young French gigolo Maurice with whom both had an affair before they were married, saying he was coming to London, they are both eager to reclaim their lost youth and meet up with him.
While the two boring husbands are off on a golfing break, both Julia and Jane work themselves up into a drunken state of excitement in anticipation of their long lost lover's return.
They remember his soft French accent and how despite his poor English, his skills definitely lay in the wooing department. All set in a sumptuous Mayfair apartment and enlivened by the piercing wit of Noel Coward, who described the play as "extremely humorous but never vulgar", this is simply great fun.
Wolfe Tones In Concert
Following their previous sell out success at Ardhowen Theatre last year DMC Promotions bring back the legendary Wolfe Tones and their own special brand of musical entertainment on Thursday 12th August with hit ballads such as 'The Streets Of New York', 'My Heart Is In Ireland', 'On The Road' and 'Celtic Symphony', their 'Let The People Sing Tour' will include songs taken from their 46 year career.
One of Ireland's foremost ballad groups, the Wolfe Tones will make the rafters ring in their own inimitable style. Early booking is advised.
Hail To 'The King'
No August is complete at Ardhowen without a visit from 'The King' and this year the traditional Elvis tribute concert at Ardhowen Theatre on Saturday 14th August, features a show which includes the amazing CC Houlihan and The Sweet Sensations. New frontman CC Houlihan was the overall winner of the Paddy Power All Ireland Elvis contest in 2008 and went on to take 3rd place out of hundreds of performers at the worldwide Elvis contest in the United States in 2009.
Quotes include "CC slips seamlessly into the part alongside a band that really rocks and is superbly backed by the classy Sweet Sensations" The Times, "CC looks like him...sounds like him...moves like him - amazing!" Memphis Press Schimater. The concert at Ardhowen starts at 8pm.
Other Events
Two other great shows take Ardhowen's Summer programme to its conclusion, with Bangor Drama Club's entertaining production of 'Steel Magnolias' which is presented for three nights on Thursday 19th, Friday 20th and Saturday 21st August at 8pm - and a visit by the legendary Henry McCullough and his band to Ardhowen's Gallery Bar on Saturday 28th August at 9pm.
The new Autumn/Winter brochure has now been out for a few weeks, with all events up to and including the pantomime in January open for booking.
