A 40-year-old man has been convicted of raping a woman as she lay sleeping in bed beside another woman.

Darren Joseph McMahon, of Carrowshee Park, Lisnaskea, denied the charge.

However, a jury at Dungannon Crown Court found him guilty of raping the woman at her home in Enniskillen on Saturday, March 3, 2012.

McMahon was remanded in custody to be sentenced on February 17.

An earlier court heard that McMahon was in the woman’s flat when she went to bed. She fell asleep with a female friend lying beside her in the bed. She was awakened by the weight of McMahon on top of her, having sex with her. She tried to wake her friend by nipping her, but her friend didn’t wake. The woman then managed to push McMahon off and told others in the flat what had happened.

McMahon told police he had been looking for a lighter to have a cigarette when the woman invited him into the single bed.

He claimed she began touching him and that their intention was to have full sex, but that it wasn’t possible due to the way they were lying and the lack of space.

He maintained they engaged in simulated intercourse.

However, the jury found him guilty of rape.
