Farmers in Fermanagh and parts of Tyrone have been rewarded for their management skills in the Fermanagh Grassland Club’s Grazing and Silage Making Competitions.
The grazing competition sponsored by the Vaughan Trust was judged by previous winner, Michael McCaughey and by Niall McCarron, Beef and Sheep Adviser, Omagh. Niall said he enjoyed visiting the various farms and seeing good quality swards and good management skills.
He said he was glad to see younger farmers on the farms.
The results were as follows; Dairying section - 1, Albert Foster, Macken; 2, James Murphy, Ballyreagh; 3, Matthew Alcorn.
Beef section - 1, Stephen Maguire, Maguiresbridge; 2, Robert Graham, Tempo; 3, Tim Carson, Lisbellaw. Overall Grazing Competition winner - Stephen Maguire.
The silage competition featured some high quality silages with one entry giving 1kg of DLWG in beef and a D value of 76.1.
Results; Under 900 tonnes - 1, Malcolm Hurst, Ballinamallard; 2, Ivan Nicholl, Lisbellaw; 3,Robert McCrea, Fivemiletown.
Over 900 tonnes - 1(tie), Ivan Henderson, Lisnaskea and Stephen Johnston, Ballinamallard; 2, Bertie Elliott, Tempo; 3, Leslie Andrews, Brookeborough.
The Houston Trophy, awarded to someone who had made the most contribution to the agricultural industry was presented to Alan Coalter, Ballinamallard.
