A special commemorative event to remember the 1916 Easter Rising was held last night (Wednesday) in Enniskillen.
The night of remembrance, organised by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, came about following the creation of the Remembering and Commemoration Events Working Group.
The Council said it recognised that 2016 would be a special year given the centenaries of the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme and wanted to ensure these events were marked with a sense of respect and inclusivity.
During last night’s event, opened by Council Chairperson Mary Garrity, an actor read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic and W.B Yeats’ Easter 1916 poem and there was music, namely Foggy Dew, Mise Eire, Barra Strand, for all those assembled on the Broadmeadow.
A spokesperson for the Council said it plans to mark the end of the Battle of the Somme in November and has delivered a £50,000 grant aid scheme for community groups to remember and commemorate the centenaries.
“This event and the planned events to mark the end of the Battle of the Somme are open to members of the public who wish to remember and commemorate in a dignified and inclusive manner. These events will include a moments silence for reflection,” said the spokesperson.
