DEMOCRATIC Unionist Councillor Paul Robinson says he agrees with U.S President Donald Trump’s temporary block on immigrants from seven Muslim majority countries visiting America.

President Trump’s executive order has sparked controversy this week with the SDLP’s John Coyle describing it as “wrong and unjust.”

It comes as The Impartial Reporter revealed yesterday that President Trump has been invited to Northern Ireland by Arlene Foster and Martin McGuinness.

The invitation was included as part of a congratulatory letter sent by the two former Stormont leaders before the power-sharing institutions collapsed.

It is a visit that may be difficult for some because of his ban but as for Councillor Robinson, he told this newspaper: “Yes, I would agree with what he’s doing.”

“You need to control your own borders, there’s too many of them coming in, causing the trouble.

“Why are they not staying in their own country sorting out their own problems?

“Those young men are coming over to America and France. Why are they not staying there and sorting out the problems in their own country,” he said.

Asked if he was specifically referring to Muslims, Councillor Robinson replied: “All the refugee countries with the war, all the war, Syria and all that there. When you look at the TV, all them young men, why are they not staying there to fight their own battles?”

Asked if he thinks there should be a similar ban in the Border area of Fermanagh Councillor Robinson replied: “There needs to be a check on the people coming in."

However, Sinn Fein Councillor Barry Doherty has said “seldom has someone so spectacularly unsuited to holding high office ascended to the presidency.”

“His victory plus the Brexit vote combined to highlight some of the nastiness that exists within society, some people who use racism and extreme nationalistic ideology to further their goals have been emboldened and believe their views to have a certain legitimacy.

“His ban on Muslims entering the US is Trump following through, like the wall, on election campaign promises and the turmoil that this has unleashed across America perhaps hints at an absolute lack of diplomatic skills,” he said.

SDLP Councillor John Coyle described President Trump’s refugee ban as “wrong and unjust.”

“This Executive order is driven by prejudice, xenophobia and racism.

“The order just does not place fear in the Muslim world but also in groups like the Irish undocumented which the focus may move to them in the future.

“We disagree with a state visit to the UK. I also encourage the Irish government to make sure no discrimination is allowed to take place in pre clearance on Irish soil,” he said.

Ulster Unionist’s Rosemary Barton said it is “heartbreaking” some communities are “facing oppression for their religion, political beliefs or now risk injury at the hands of their own Government.”
