South West Acute Hospital is experiencing “recruitment and retention challenges” in maternity services, The Impartial Reporter can reveal.

As a result several well placed sources have contacted this newspaper in the past number of days claiming that the future of maternity services is in doubt.

The Impartial Reporter asked the Western Health and Social Care Trust last Friday a number of questions about the ongoing issues at the hospital.

In a statement issued this morning (Tuesday), a spokeswoman for the Trust said: “The Western Trust is not planning to make any changes to the maternity services at the South West Acute Hospital.”

“The Trust can confirm that it has been experiencing some recruitment and retention challenges with medical staff in maternity services at the South West Acute Hospital.

“However, we are doing everything possible to ensure the services continue in a safe and sustainable manner,” she said.
