Fivemiletown Royal British Legion unveiled a silhouette of a soldier last Saturday to mark the 100th Anniversary of the ending of the First World War.

Prior to the dedication they held their Annual Poppy Appeal Coffee morning where they raised £1,725 pounds which included a £300 donation from the Blessingbourne Belles, a local ladies group.

Spokesman Iain Lendrum said: ”Yet again the fantastic community of Fivemiletown have shown their generosity and we thank them for their continued support."

At 1pm all those in attendance moved to the memorial garden for the service of dedication and unveiling. The Rev Kyle Hanlon opened the service in prayer followed by the planting of 73 metal poppies in memory of the 73 names recorded on the town's war memorial.

These poppies had been purchased by the local community with all profits going to the Poppy Appeal. A total of £448 was raised through this venture.

Local children helped plant the poppies creating a sea of red around the silhouette.

Piper Charlie McClintock played a lament as the poppies where laid.

The honour of unveiling the memorial was given to Victor Wilson and Geoffrey Forde who were relatives of the late George Little a WW2 veteran who had left a donation in his will towards the up-keep of the Memorial Garden.

After the unveiling an Act of Remembrance took place with Robert Carson FMT RBL Branch Chairman delivering the exhortation. Noel Trimble of Murley band played the last post and reveille. Rev Kyle Hanlon closed the proceedings in prayer and a blessing before those in attendance returned to the hall for a cup of tea to warm up. There they viewed the poetry and artistic work on view from FMT Primary and FMT Community College pupils depicting their thoughts and images from the First World War.
