A father charged with the attempted murder of his daughter has been refused bail for the second time at Fermanagh Magistrates' Court.

Charles McDonagh of Collcullen Meadow, Enniskillen is charged with attempted murder and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. His son Sean, also of Coolcullen Meadow, is charged with attempted murder, grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place after an incident on October 14, 2018 when their daughter and sister respectively was shot through the arm with a crossbow bolt.

Both father and son appeared via videolink from Maghaberry Prison.

An officer told the court that the full file had been submitted to the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) and was now part of the case progression process with no outstanding matters.

The incident allegedly began with a row between Sean McDonagh and his sister in which he punched her on the head before she fell to the ground. CCTV footage from Charles McDonagh's house then shows the father and son holding crossbows. Bodycam footage also picks up Charles McDonagh telling police officers: "I meant to kill my daughter. I'm mad in the head."

The officer also revealed that the complainant in the case had made a statement to police on November 23 having not previously engaged with police. They believed that the statement was made to pacify the family and take the blame away from the father.

Defending solicitor Myles McManus, in applying for bail for Charles McDonagh, asked the officer if there had been further CCTV footage identified which does not further implicate the father which they confirmed there was.

Mr. McManus continued saying that the victim exonerates her father in her statement and there is no further evidence that can be submitted to the PPS which points the finger at the 46 year old.

Mr. McManus said with the statement from the injured party, the circumstances in the case had changed and his client would be a suitable candidate for bail with various assurances able to be given, including a bail address in Newtownbulter and a surety of £3,000 from the family to ensure all conditions were adhered to.

However, District Judge Michael Ranahan refused to grant bail saying the defendant still represented a danger to his daughter and there was a risk of further offending.

The case has been adjourned until December 31 when father and son will appear again via videolink.
