A number of Fermanagh students and young people are "on strike from school" today (April 12) to lobby the government to declare a “climate emergency.”

The Enniskillen ‘Youth Strike 4 Climate’ has been organised in solidarity with similar strikes taking place across the UK.

One of the strike organisers Meabh Mackin (17) said: “We are here in Enniskillen in solidarity with other strikes across the UK, where there are strikes in over 70 towns with the aim to lobby the government to declare a climate emergency.”

She added: “We would also like to encourage people in the local Fermanagh community to enact their own positive change by cutting down anything that they can and to reduce plastic waste and carbon emissions so that we are all doing our part to prevent the climate emergency that we have upon us.”

The Enniskillen ‘Youth Strike 4 Climate’ is currently taking place in Enniskillen town centre until 2.30pm.
