Christmas might only feel like yesterday but Easter has already rolled around for another year. After a fortnight of school holidays earlier in the month you might be struggling for inspiration for what to do over the long weekend but this list should have you covered.

1. Pirate Easter Egg Hunts at the Tall Ship, Glasgow

Why hunt for eggs in the garden when you can do it on a massive ship? Kids can join the ‘pirate crew’ to hunt for hidden treasure around the 245ft-long Glenlee ship, with chocolate eggs as a reward once they finish. As the little ones race around the decks you can take in its fascinating history: exploring the captain’s cabin, cargo hold and even the steering wheel on the main deck.

The stunning Glamis Castle is worth a visit at any time of year but especially so over the Easter weekend. Its extensive grounds will be hosting a Easter market: with stalls selling everything from wine to cheese and chillies. There will also be children’s rides, face painting, a giant cupcake hunt through the gardens and tours of the castle at a discounted rate.

Nothing quite says "Easter" like new-born lambs and baby chicks. You can find both at the Almond Valley Heritage Centre, where visitors are able to get hands-on with the animals and even bottle feed the lambs (during sessions at 11am, 2pm and 4pm). Children can also make their own Easter bonnet, hunt for hidden eggs round the gardens and cheer on plastic ducks in a race down the river.

4. Teddy McBear’s Picnic at Braemar Castle, Aberdeen

Braemar Castle: the scene of Jacobite uprisings, attempted arson, royal visits… and a teddy bear’s picnic. On Easter Sunday this magnificent castle will play host to the Teddy McBear’s picnic, where children can meet big Teddy McBears (the patron of the castle) between 2pm and 4pm. They can also get a free Easter egg, a copy of the story of Teddy McBear and the chance to run around the castle’s extensive grounds and woodland.

If you want to escape from all the Easter egg rolling and chocolate munching, then you can’t do much better than going to visit some robots. The National Museum of Scotland has created one of the biggest collections of humanoid robots assembled, with more than 100 objects on show that chart the progress of the machines throughout the centuries. Kids will particularly love the interactive robot that they can high five, fist bump and pat on the head.

6. Haddo House Egg Hunt, Aberdeen

A bit of an institution among Easter egg hunts, Aberdeen’s Haddo House has been hosting an egg hunt for several years. Kids are let loose to try and uncover the painted wooden eggs that are hidden throughout the grounds, with even adults likely to struggle to spot every one. And, to make it even better, a percentage of the money raised from the event will be donated to a local charity.

7. Breakfast with the Bunny, Hard Rock Café Glasgow

Some children seem to have a boundless energy from the second that they open their eyes in the morning. If you want to encourage them to burn off a bit of this energy, then the Hard Rock Café’s Breakfast with the Bunny should be a good place to start. Starting at 9am on Easter Sunday, the Glasgow venue will offer dancing with the Easter Bunny, a family magic show and a mammoth buffet.

The Caledonian Railway is a not for profit organisation, run by volunteers, that operates traditional steam trains along the four miles of track between Brechin and Bridge of Dun. Young and old alike will enjoy taking in the sights and sounds as the train trundles through the countryside, with a special treat being handed out to all passengers over the Easter weekend.

9. Easter Eggstravaganza at Whitelee Windfarm, Eaglesham

If you are going to take part in any egg roll, then you couldn’t get much more of a dramatic backdrop than Whitelee Windfarm. The largest onshore windfarm in the British Isles, Whitelee also hosts a considerable amount of community activities that are organised by its countryside rangers. This year, they are offering children the chance to decorate their own egg and then take part in a special egg-rolling challenge.

10. West End Easter Egg Hunt, Edinburgh

Celebrating Easter right in the heart of the city centre, this weekend Edinburgh businesses will host a free Easter egg trail around the west end. Families are encouraged to pick up a map and try to spot the eggs hidden in shop, restaurant and office windows: whereupon they will be given a chocolate egg and the chance to win a season pass to Edinburgh Zoo.

11. A Celtic Spring, Scottish Crannog Centre Loch Tay, Kenmore, near Aberfeldy, Perthshire. This Easter the centre is hosting a special spring event: with crafts, cooking, and children’s activities. Dogs are welcome along too.

12. Craigtoun Easter Fayre, St Andrews

A few years ago, no one could have blamed you if you didn’t know what an alpaca was. But now they are omnipresent, adorning stationery, clothing and birthday cards with their charmingly awkward appearance. They are set to be the star attraction of the petting zoo at the Craigtoun Easter Fayre, where children’s entertainers will also be performing throughout the day.

13. Easter Treasure Hunt Logan Botanic Gardens, Stranraer

Considered to be most exotic garden in Scotland, the tropical plants in Logan Botanic Gardens will create a beautiful backdrop for an Easter day out. Inquisitive kids should collect a sheet from the gift shop, then head to the garden to hunt down and solve the Easter clues to claim a prize.

The cosy setting of Robert Burns’ Birthplace Museum makes an ideal setting for this Easter Neverland Tea Party. Wannabe Tinker Bells and Peter Pans are sure to love dressing up, playing games and getting some fairytale face paint, as well as magically-themed food to finish.

15. Easter Duck Race, Aberfoyle

No matter your age, there is something strangely exciting about cheering on a plastic duck as it races down the river. The Lodge in Aberfoyle will host three separate duck races on Easter Sunday, with a special waterfall trail to walk along after you finish.
