A local entertainer who went to a bar after a removal and ended up driving home has been disqualified from driving.

Anthony McBrien with an address of Drumlin Court, Enniskillen was three times over the limit.

The court heard on April 16, 2019 at around 11.10pm police observed a vehicle on the Derrylin Road, Lisnaskea heading towards Derrylin which was travelling slowly and swerving across the road.

The car stopped and police spoke to the defendant whose speech was slurred and there was a strong smell of intoxicating liquor of him.

The defendant was tested and failed at the roadside. An evidential test was also carried out which returned a reading of 104mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

McBrien was then charged with driving with excess alcohol in his breath.

Ciaran Roddy, representing McBrien said it was accepted that his client being three times over the legal limit was an aggravating factor.

He said his client had been at the removal of someone he knew and then went to a bar with the intention of leaving the car there.

Mr. Roddy said the 47 year old had tried to get a lift home organised but friends and taxis were not able to collect him and so he had undertaken the journey against his better judgement.

The court heard that McBrien drove for five mile unaware that the police were behind him before pulling over. It was then that police spoke to the defendant.

Mr. Roddy said his client was extremely embarrassed to be before the court and he cannot believe he exercised this judgement and he asked the court to give McBrien maximum credit for his early plea and co-operation with police.

District Judge Michael Ranaghan told McBrien his very, very high reading had clearly affected his driving but that he would take into account the early plea and and he had initially no intention to drive.

However to reflect the high reading he disqualified McBrien for 16 months, certified him for a drink drivers course and fined him £200.
