Showcasing authentic Irish culture through the medium of traditional music, song and dance, the opening weekend of this year's Fermanagh Fleadh was a true celebration of local talent.
Hosted jointly by Derrylin and Benaughlin CCÉ, the Fermanagh Fleadh kicked off on Friday, June 7 with the Opening Concert at Kinawley Community Centre. On the night there were musical performances from the Cathcart Family and Sean Dolan as well as Gary Curley, Stephen McKee and Julie-Ann McCaffrey plus various other talented local musicians. The Blackwater Ceili Band headlined the concert, performing to a full house and bringing a brilliant night of entertainment to a close. Following the concert, there were late night music sessions in Roches Bar, Mountview Bar and Blakes Bar.
Over the course of the weekend there were musical performances on the 'gig rig' from artists including Garadice, The Bandjacks and the Travellin Trads to name a few. Singing sessions held on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9 proved very popular, drawing big crowds on both days.
On both Saturday and Sunday there were opportunities for musicians of all ages to showcase their unique musical talents in a variety of competitions which took place in St. Aidan's High School. The winners of each section will go on to compete at the Ulster Fleadh which will take place in Castlewellan from July 22 to 28. Those who succeed in the Ulster Fleadh will compete in the All-Ireland Fleadh in Drogheda in August.
