Cancer charity founder Breda McGrenaghan has been appointed the new High Sheriff for County Fermanagh, taking on the prestigious role for 2020.

Commenting on her appointment as High Sheriff, Breda said: “I feel honoured to have been nominated and selected High Sheriff for Fermanagh 2020.

“As a new decade commences I hope to make a positive contribution to this role through my continued charity work and by attending functions/events.”

She added: “I look forward to representing and promoting this beautiful county.”

Cancer Connect NI founders, Phil and Breda McGrenaghan were recognised in the Queen’s birthday honours list last summer and were each awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to cancer patients in Fermanagh.

The awards came as the charity celebrated its 10th year and followed the news that Cancer Connect NI Volunteers was awarded the Queen’s Award for voluntary service.

Breda has had a career in Education and Human Resources prior to founding the local charity, Cancer Connect NI in 2009.

She represented the Department of Education on the Board of Governors of a local primary school from 2005 to 2013.

Currently she sits on the Trust/Charities Collaborative Board and the Cancer Locality Partnership Forum.

Breda is a schools’ debates adjudicator and has trained in colour and style analysis.

The High Sheriff role is largely ceremonial and is transferred annually.

Breda takes over from the previous High Sheriff for 2019, Kate Doherty.
