There are currently six patients in South West Acute Hospital who have tested positive for Covid-19, The Impartial Reporter has learned.

But because testing within the community is not happening due to a UK-wide policy the true extent of who has the disease is not known.

The Department of Health confirmed this morning that one patient who had tested positive for coronavirus had died in a hospital in Northern Ireland.

A spokesperson explained that the patient was elderly, had an underlying medical condition and was being treated in a hospital in the greater Belfast area.

In a statement, Health Minister Robin Swann said: “I want to express my deep sadness at this death and send my condolences to the patient’s family and friends. It is, of course, essential that we respect their privacy at this sad time.

"I would once again appeal to everyone to play their part in fighting the spread of this virus.
