Tributes have poured in for much-loved Erne Integrated College teacher Francis McBrien, a true gentleman who was known for his honest and caring nature.

Francis, who was from Mullaghdun, died unexpectedly on May 16 at the age of 48.

“He was the best brother you could have,” said Francis’ sister AnnaRose, paying tribute to her late brother who achieved much in his short life. “He was an immensely proud and thoughtful person who gave his time to others more than himself. It was just a pleasure to be in his company. He was a true friend, we miss him so much,” she added.

A teacher at Erne Integrated College for many years, Francis loved his profession. He was very passionate about teaching and his pupils. He was dedicated to his pupils.

Francis was highly regarded by the whole school community, which was evident by the many thoughtful tributes paid by staff and students, past and present.

Paying tribute to his beloved colleague on behalf of the school community, Jimmy said: “Fran joined the college in 2000 after spending a number of years teaching in England. Fran taught Maths and ICT and generations of our students will be grateful for Fran’s tuition, guidance, care and wisdom.”

He continued: “As a staff we will always remember Fran’s intelligence and wit and his love of a good laugh. Fran never missed an extra-curricular event: Evening’s of celebration, concerts, Christmas fairs, Carol Services, Fran was always there and prepared to do whatever was needed, if necessary taking on the most menial tasks. Fran truly loved the school and his students, he was the essence of integrated education and he knew - from his own experience - that for young people in Fermanagh, education provided a unique opportunity to explore the world and enrich their lives.”

“Erne Integrated College will forever miss the lively spirit, the quiet dedication and quirky ways of Mr. McBrien, he was one of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time. May he rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam,” Jimmy concluded.

Acknowledging the many tributes paid to Francis over the last few days, a tearful AnnaRose said: “They mean the world to us. It’s a great comfort to us to know that he was so loved. They are very appreciated.”

Aside from his teaching profession, Francis had many varied interests. “He was a very active person, he enjoyed being fit, he ran the London Marathon twice, and taught ju jitsu in England. Francis took a great interest in the home farm, often spent many long days helping out on the farm,” shared AnnaRose.
