An unusual sale of Highland cattle has taken place recently at Dowra Mart, Co.Cavan.

The cattle were sold during a Saturday cattle sale at the mart with both live bidders and online bidders taking part.

Auctioneer, Terry McGovern, reported that top price of the collection of Highland cattle being sold by a vendor from the Ballyconnell area who had established the herd and was now changing his farm policy, was €2310 for a cow and bull calf.

The next highest price was €1820 for a 2015 dry cow and €1700 for a 2018 maiden heifer. Three of the cattle were sold to bidders present at the mart and two were sold online.

Terry says they have been selling large numbers of cattle with prices well up on previous months. Sheep prices have also shown greatly improved prices.

Dowra Mart is also an export centre for animals destined for direct slaughter in Northern Ireland and has had increasing numbers coming north of the border.

The mart has been attracting increasing Northern Ireland farmers in recent times.
